Mountain biking is a sport which originated in the 1970s. The sport started in Marin County, California. It was created by combining two existing sports – mountain climbing and road cycling.
The idea of mountain biking came from the need to explore trails that were not accessible by cars, but only by foot or on horseback. The first bikes were made with heavy steel frames and fat tires, which allowed riders to travel over rough terrain without getting stuck or having their feet get caught in the spokes of the wheels.
